CYCLING SULAWESI |
|
Relaxing with some local people on Lake Dampelas, Sulawesi.
Cycling Sulawesi is the creation of Richard ("Rich") Fuller, M.Sc., University of California at Davis, U.S.A., a lover of nature, anthropology, linguistics and agriculture. Rich has been living and working in Southeast Asia for most of the last 36 years.
He has been exploring North and Central Sulawesi for cycling routes since 1997. He has led trips there since 1999. When he started, it was impossible to find a decent working bicycle, so he and his ace mechanic Jan purchased and re-built mountain bikes so Rich could pursue the cycling he loves. It was the beautiful thinly-populated countryside, the mountains, lakes, the sea and such friendly people that brought him to create Cycling Sulawesi.
Rich speaks 7 languages, including fluent Vietnamese and fair Indonesian, and has lived in Southeast Asia for most of the last 35 years. He loves the cultures of the region and is always a student of the many groups of people and languages he has encountered since first coming to Southeast Asia in 1969. He has translated the songs found on the Folksongs pages of Cycling Sulawesi and Cycling Viet Nam.
Rich is semi-retired, teaching English. Rich truly enjoys cycling in Sulawesi and will be happy to take you there.
As a result, Rich likes to cycle with people with similar interests. While there is nightlife in Manado and Palu, the rest of the North and Central Sulawesi is quiet, with small towns, and agricultural and fishing villages along our sojourns. The freedom and challenge of being on the road on a beautiful tropical island is the main attraction.
Please note that we are NOT into off-road biking or racing! Our goal is to ride from point to point, enjoying what is along the way. Good exercise, to be sure, but not the Tour de France! Please feel free to contact us for further information, whether you prefer cycling or just to enjoy the ride!
